AITA for calling my boyfriend a weirdo when he said a white woman wears hoop earrings to attract black men ?

The user, a 27-year-old woman, was at the gym when her boyfriend, a 25-year-old man, arrived to pick her up but before she had finished her workout.

Upon seeing her silver hoop earrings, the boyfriend made a specific comment suggesting that white women wear such earrings to attract Black men. When the user reacted negatively, calling him a weirdo, he then stated that a white woman with a large posterior also attracts Black men, claiming he was trying to compliment her. This left the user confused and questioning her boyfriend’s intentions.

AITA for calling my boyfriend a weirdo when he said a white woman wears hoop earrings to attract black men ?

I (27f) am very confused. My boyfriend (25m) and I are both white. I was at the gym. My boyfriend came to pick me up but I wasn’t done with my workout.

He pointed out the fact that I was wearing silver hoop earrings.

I thought he was going to say it something about them not being safe at the gym. But what he said was, a white woman wears hoop earrings to attract black men.

I was so flabbergasted by that comment.

I called him a weirdo and then he said he was just trying to give me a compliment. He then told me a white woman with a big ass attracts black men. I don’t know what to make his comments.

Am I the asshole ?

Here’s how people reacted:

Hmmm…I wish I could attract more black men….what to do? Talk to black guys? Flirt with them? Shit I know! HOOP EARRINGS!

SMH. Not only is your boyfriend weird, he’s dumb as a rock if he thinks anyone is gonna believe that was meant as a compliment! He sounds insecure, jealous, and potentially very controlling. How long have you been dating? Because I feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg and he’s just begun to show his true colors. Don’t be surprised if he starts complaining if you wear anything the least bit tight or revealing.

Indifferentwhore

As a black woman, he most likely has a complex when it comes to black men. Probably from some weird 🌽as that’s the only logical reason I can think for that to be what he says. If it was just regular jealousy he would’ve made the type of man broader, him specifically stating black men is weird.
Separate-Emotion-465

In my personal experience it is the white men who have liked the hoop earrings and big ass. 🤣 Where did your dude get the idea that those two things are meant to attract men of color? Definitely NTA here, he is a weirdo.
Visual_Witness4456

NTA he sounds really uninformed/ignorant about dating, interracial relationships and women’s fashions, and probably women too. Women wear hoop earring because we like them.

Maybe find someone who is more evolved.

Spitfyrus

I mean….. thats low key racist though and your boyfriend sounds like he is suffering from insecurities. Dump the incel you deserve better before you end up in a body bag. GIRL RUN!
Numerical-Wordsmith

NTA. White women sometimes have big butts because women have butts. White women sometimes wear hoop earrings because… wait for it… some white women like hoop earrings.
QuickGoogleSearch

These stories always lack context and women always paraphrase this shit and never actual conversation. I was married to a woman like this. So fucking annoying.
Unlikely-Effort1318

NTA
Your boyfriend is far worse than a weirdo, he is a racist. Dump him immediately. Nobody, especially men, should police what women wear for any reason.
syntheticmeatproduct

Sorry but it needs to be said directly: your boyfriend’s brain has been warped by porn and you’ve just learned his favorite genre.
Sufficient_Item5662

I guess he is saying that you’re not trying to attract black men is a compliment.
🎼I like big butts and I can not lie..🎼
Christian_teen12

NTA,as a black person that’s such an odd statement to say.
She could be wearing it because she likes those earrings ?
Asenath_W8

Nah you’re in the right He’s weird as hell unless he thinks every white woman in the 80s had jungle fever
sc12115

He sounds like a closeted cuckold imo, he probably gets off on the thought of you being with a black man
GasStandard5560

I think your boyfriend as got some insecurities and is talking then out on you with these remarks
CoffeeCat77

Your boyfriend’s comments sound like thinly veiled racism & possessiveness.
Corvuss1

I’m failing to see the connection between hoop earrings and black men.
ArgentSol61

How could you possibly be the asshole? Of course you’re not.

NTA. Ditch his ridiculous ass.

Conclusion

The original poster is currently confused by her boyfriend’s statements, which she perceives as strange and inappropriate comments rooted in racial stereotypes, despite his claim that they were compliments. The central conflict lies between the poster’s expectation of supportive and respectful behavior from her partner and the boyfriend’s introduction of racially charged observations into a personal interaction.

The situation requires consideration of whether the boyfriend’s comments stemmed from genuine, albeit poorly expressed, attraction, or if they reveal underlying biases or a misunderstanding of respectful communication. Readers must weigh whether the act of making such racially coded comments, regardless of intent, warrants the poster’s concern.
