When Jake’s strict mom doesn’t let his wife and stepdaughter join the family for dinner, he chooses to teach her a hard lesson about what family really means.
My name is Jake. I want to tell you a story about how I stood up for my family even though someone who should have been there for me didn’t like it. This is how it all began.
When I met Linda a year ago, my whole life changed. She’s wonderful—kind, smart, and very strong.
She brought her little daughter May with her. May and I got along right away when we met. Her laugh is contagious and can make even the worst days better.
I took on the part of May’s dad since he’s not in the picture. She seemed like she was always meant to be in my life.
Then there’s my mom. Her ideas about what a family should be like are very set in stone. Linda is Black, and Mom never said anything directly, but what she did said a lot. Whenever we asked her to come over, she always had a reason.
Our wedding was where our hearts really broke.
My mom wouldn’t be in any pictures of the family. It was hard for me to hold back tears as she looked at me with a sneer.
She said to herself, “This won’t last,” as she walked right past me. “You’ll come to your senses, eventually.”
She said something mean to Linda, and Linda cried so hard that night. The fact that mom didn’t like it ruined a day that should have been wonderful.
But Mom did something a few weeks ago that made me lose it.
To sum up, my mom called me on a Saturday afternoon in a panicked state, saying she was having a heart attack.
I could barely understand her because she was crying and gasping in pain. I dropped everything and ran to her house quickly because I was scared the worst would happen.
My heart sank when I got there, but not for the reason I thought it would.
There she was, looking fine while sitting easily on the couch. My brothers, their wives, and their children, who were her biological grandkids, were all around her. Each person except for Linda, May, and I.
When my mom saw me, she laughed and said, “Finally, our family is together without that worry you always bring with you.”
“What are you talking about?” I was still shocked when I asked. “What’s going on here?”
Mom quickly answered, “We’re having a family dinner.”
“I lied about the heart attack,” she said, “because it was the only way to get you here alone.”
I was dumbfounded and stood there like a fool while my mom looked proud of herself. I couldn’t believe she would lie about having a heart attack to keep my family out.
I felt angry, but I didn’t lose my cool. But I knew that getting angry wouldn’t help. I chose to play along instead.
I forced a smile and said, “Oh, thank God you’re okay, Mom.” “You really had me worried.”
She seemed so proud, like she had just won a fight. But I was boiling on the inside. I had to make sure she learned my lesson.
I thought about how I could show her what real family is for a few days. That’s when the picture album thought of itself.
I looked through old family pictures and found all of the ones with Linda and May in them. There were a lot of happy memories, and seeing them made me more determined.
I copied those pictures and put them in a lovely book called “Our Complete Family.” My mom should know how happy and whole my family was with Linda and May.
Then I asked Mom to come over for a special dinner with my family. I set the trap by implying that I was going to divorce Linda to get her to come.
When my mom got there, she seemed like she had won something. She had no idea what was going to happen.
I tried to keep my tone light and friendly when I told my mom, “I’m glad you came.” “It’s been too long since we all sat down together.”
Linda was nice to her, and May ran up to give her a hug. Even though I could tell my mom wasn’t sure what to do, she awkwardly patted May on the back. At least it was a start.
Mom seemed calm during dinner, as if she knew she had successfully kept me away from Linda and May. I kept the chat light by talking about work and unimportant family news.
Then I sucked in my breath and told my mom, “I have something interesting for you.”
I took out the picture album I had planned and named “Our Complete Family.” I smiled as I gave it to her.
She opened the album and turned the pages. As she did so, her face went from being interested to confused to angry.
“What is this supposed to mean?” she asked in a sharp voice.
I said, “It means this is my family, and they are not a burden.” Shirley and May will always be a part of my life. If you don’t accept that, you won’t be a part of our lives anymore.
She got angry and looked like she was going to say something, but I didn’t let her.
“There’s more,” I said next.
“Linda and I are renewing our vows next month, and you’re invited.” Mom saw me look her straight in the eye. “But only if you promise to respect Linda and May.”
She couldn’t say anything, but I didn’t stop there. I put my hand on Linda’s and told her, “I’m also officially adopting May.” In every way, she will be my daughter.
It was quiet in the room. My mom’s face quickly went from shocked to angry and back again, but I could see that she was starting to understand that I wasn’t going to give up.
She finally slammed the door behind her as she stormed out. The tense atmosphere in the room went away, and I felt a wave of relief. When Linda gave me a tight hug, she had tears in her eyes. May smiled bigly at me.
“Thank you, Jake,” Linda said in a low voice. “For standing up for us.”
I told her, “Always,” and kissed her face. “You two are my family, and nothing will ever change that.”
So, when I told them we were renewing our vows and adopting May, there was instant chaos.
After a few days, my brothers called me to say that Mom was angry and felt cheated. They were interested in what had taken place. I told her that Mom’s actions were wrong because they were hurting Linda and May.
To my surprise, they got it.
“Jake, we had no idea it was this bad,” Tom, my other brother, said. This is too much for my mom. She’s always been stubborn. “You did the right thing.”
Sam, my younger brother, added, “Yeah, man.” We’re here for you. Family is more than just blood. It’s love and respect. We’ll try to get Mom to understand that by talking to her.
Their help was very helpful. I thought a weight had been taken off my shoulders. It meant a lot to me that my brothers were on my side.
I heard from Mom after about a week. I could tell she had been crying because her voice was shaking. I asked her to come over because she wanted to talk. I was surprised when she showed up at my door soon after, looking tired and sorry.
“Jake, I’m so sorry,” she said with tears in her eyes. “I was so blinded by my own prejudices that I didn’t see how much I was hurting you and our family.”
“Our family?” I asked straight out.
“All of our family,” she said, pointing to the living room, where Linda and May were watching TV. “I’ll take better care of Linda and May from now on.” I’ll fix things.
It didn’t work right away, but it was a start. Step by step, we started to fix our relationship. Things got better over time because Mom really tried to get to know Linda and May. Even more, she came to our ceremony to renew our vows and treated Linda and May with the respect they earned.
What’s the lesson here? Even if it means going against your family, stand up for the people you care about. People sometimes need a rude awakening to understand what they’ve done wrong. Don’t let anyone make the people you care about feel like they are a nuisance.
