As Nina listened in on their talk, her heart raced. Each phrase they spoke seemed like a puzzle piece that was gradually fitting together to form a picture she never would have imagined.
As Darla drew in closer to Gran, her words had a note of urgency. Her eyes darted across the room as she murmured, “Did she say anything?”
Gran gave a serious shake of her head. Nothing as of yet, but it’s evident in her eyes. She is aware of an issue.
As Nina tried to put together what they may be discussing, her thoughts raced. Gran didn’t want her to know what, exactly?
Nina took a deep breath and found the confidence to face them. She cleared her throat and got up from her seat, grabbing their attention. She said, her voice firm despite the nerves seething beneath the surface, “I couldn’t help but overhear.” “Exactly what are you two discussing?”
Gran’s eyes opened in astonishment, and she briefly displayed a hint of anxiety before gathering her composure. She said in a tone that was a little too casual to be credible, “Oh, it’s nothing, dear.”
Nina, though, was not going to accept it. “It sounded like something,” she insisted, her eyes unblinking. “And I believe I should be aware of what’s happening.”
Gran got a concerned look from Darla, who then inhaled deeply. With her voice scarcely audible above a whisper, she confided, “It’s about your father.” “There is something you should be aware of.”
As Nina listened closely and her thoughts raced with a million questions, her heart skipped a beat. How much information about her father could they possibly have for her?
