Only around 5% of the ocean, which makes up 70% of the planet, has been thoroughly studied by humans. We have a lot to learn about the ocean because, as is well known, we know very little about it.
A weird sea creature recently came ashore on a beach in California, sparking some intriguing inquiries. Read on to learn more about what transpired.
In the depths of the ocean, there are many organisms that have not yet been identified by humans. Due to the oceans’ vastness and depth, which make it almost difficult for humans to be able to fully explore the oceans, we have a limited understanding of the ocean and the marine life that lives there.
Another example of how little we actually understand about the ocean came to light last week when a deep marine animal washed up on Californian shores.
At Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach on October 13, a bizarre critter washed up on the coast. The California park recognized it as a Pacific footballfish in a Facebook message. Due to the harsh environment it is found in, the fish usually lives in the murky depths of the sea and is seldom ever seen by humans.
“Guess who washed up just in time for Friday the 13th?” the statement said, expressing amazement at its finding. At Crystal Cove State Park, it’s fish number two for anglers. “The same type of angler fish, Pacific Football Fish, was discovered onshore by a park visitor in May 2021, sparking quite a buzz,” it stated. This Friday, October 13, the same species of fish washed ashore once more after two years. They posed the disturbing question, “What does it all mean?,” which made people wonder how this incident could have happened.
According to the announcement, the unsettling-looking animal has been taken by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife “for further research”.
According to the statement, there are over 200 species of anglerfish that can be found in the world’s waters. Additionally, it stated that “only females have a long stalk on their heads with bioluminescent tips that they employ as a bait to seduce food in pitch-black water as deep as 3,000 feet!”
The Anglerfish have enormous mouths that enable them to consume prey that is “the size of their own body” and teeth that resemble “pointed shards of glass,” according to the statement.
It’s amazing how they reproduce, to put it mildly. The species’ males only reach an inch in height in contrast to the females, who can reach heights of up to 24 inches. It was stated that the male “latch onto the female with their fangs and become’sexual parasites,’ gradually combining with the female until nothing is left of their form but their testes for reproduction.”
The park stated that it is “extremely rare” to find such a fish on the coast that is still entirely whole. It added that “it is unknown how or why these fish came up ashore.”
“Seeing this strange and fascinating fish is a testament to the curious diversity of marine life lurking below the water’s surface in California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and as scientists continue to learn more about these deep sea creatures, it’s important to reflect on how much is still to be learned from our wonderful and mysterious ocean!” In their post, Crystal Cove made a conclusion.
The journey a creature from the deep sea took to the coast is amazing. It begs several questions concerning the possible cause of its migration to shallower waters. All of this is still a mystery right now!
The fish discovered in May 2021 is being housed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, according to the park, which claims that a similar incident occurred two years earlier.
