In the 1980s, Kathleen Turner became famous for being both pretty and strong. Many people think she is one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood.
The actress has been through a lot of good and bad things over the years, and this determination has helped her get through all of them. Kathleen Turner grew up with four other kids in a home, even though her background was hard.
My sister and I grew up with her in both Venezuela and London. When she was a little girl, she saw her father die suddenly while mowing the lawn of their home in Hampstead.
A month after he died, Kathleen and her family were kicked out of the UK by the foreign service. Turner moved her family to Springfield, Missouri, but everyone was still sad about their dad and the house they had lived in before.
After moving to New York as an adult to try to become an actress, Tuner finally felt calm. She had some success on the stage, but her big break came when she was cast as the bad girl in the 1981 movie “Body Heat.”
Three years after starring next to William Hurt, Turner was given a chance to co-star with Michael Douglas in the famous “Romancing the Stone.” At the time of filming, Douglas and Turner started to feel something for each other. Douglas was going through a rough divorce from his wife Diandra.
“We were falling in love—all we could do was look at each other with longing eyes and flirt loads.” “Diandra then came down and told me he was still married,” Kathleen said.
In the end, she married Jay Weiss, the real estate developer from the movie, in 1984. Soon after, they had their only daughter together. Rachel Weiss was born on October 14, 1987.
As they started to raise their daughter, the couple’s relationship started to fall apart.
Companies that make movies would have to give me extra tickets or longer weekends so my daughter and husband could come with me. But it seemed like all the work in the marriage was on his end, which made me feel bad. One reason it ended was because of that. I began to feel a lot of pressure. She said, “I thought, ‘Hang on a minute, you’ve done very well out of being married to me too.'”
Their marital issues reached a breaking point when Turner played Martha in the Broadway revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in 2005. Turner was very busy because she had eight shows a week, and Weiss didn’t seem to want to spend any time with her when she was at home.
Turner was nominated for a Tony for her role as Martha at that time, and the couple separated without a fight.
The actress was nominated for an Oscar in 1987 for her role in “Peggy Sue Got Married.” During the 1980s, she kept making movies and was in a number of big hits, including three with Michael Douglas.
But Kathleen had a medical setback in the 1990s when her neck locked up and she couldn’t turn her head. She could not use her hands either because they were swollen.
Kathleen told them, “It was crippling.” “When you lose something, even for a short time, you stop taking it for granted.” What I didn’t think much about was how athletic I was and how I could throw myself around and move in any way I wanted. “Who am I if I can’t do this?” I asked myself when I lost that part of myself.
It turned out that her bad luck was caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the lining of our joints swells up. It can be hard to deal with the chronic pain that this illness causes.
Kathleen said, “When they first told me I had it, I was scared because they said I’d be in a wheelchair.” “I told myself, ‘If I can’t move, I can’t act.'” I want to do more than just act. I was made to do it. It’s all over my life. The most scary thing was the thought of not being able to do it, along with the constant pain.
Kathleen used drugs and alcohol to deal with her pain. Although they made it easier for her to work, her propensity for consuming vodka caused her to pass out during dress rehearsals for plays like the 2002 theatrical production of “The Graduate.”
The actress actually went to rehab after the show ended, where it was found that she was not an alcoholic. In its place, she was told to better remember when she took her medicines and any bad effects they caused.
The actress now does yoga and pilates to keep her flexible and deal with her pain.
The famous person started to really focus on her job as an actress while better managing her pain. She kept working in movies and TV shows from time to time, but as she got older, she mostly went back to what she loved. In her forties, she even starred in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” on stage.
Kathleen said, “Because I knew that the better roles as I got older would be in theater, which is true. That was a little foresight on my part that I am rightly proud of.”
The actress has been able to devote more time to her passions by concentrating on the theater, including volunteering for Amnesty International and working for Planned Parenthood of America.
Turner is a strong feminist who has spent most of her life helping other women. Gloria Feldt’s 2008 biography of the actress, Send Yourself Roses, shows her ideas accurately.
“We’re the first women in our generation who can fund our own lives.” She said, “Women are going back to work.” “They are changing who they are. I thought I could back that up and even make it stronger. It has a lot of philosophy and my beliefs in it.
