Throughout the past few years, Johnny Depp has undoubtedly experienced the most trying time in his long and distinguished career, but it seems the Pirates of the Caribbean star is on the mend.
It doesn’t seem all that long ago that fans were wondering if we’d ever see Depp in another significant on-screen project. At this time last year, he and his ex-wife Amber Heard were embroiled in a public court battle as a variety of private affairs were made public.
After winning his defamation case, the actor focused on resuming his film career in order to make up for lost time and cash. Last week, he attended the Cannes Film Festival to promote his new movie, Jeanne Du Barry.
The 59-year-past old’s two years must have been a roller coaster of emotions, but he will have woken up today in a very happy mood because the event was a huge success.
Fans reportedly yelled Depp’s name as he walked the red carpet at the Palais, and one woman reportedly sobbed in an effort to gain his attention.
But, what transpired inside the theater after Depp and Jeanne Du Barry director Mawenn entered were the events that are currently making news.
The assembled throng greeted the two with wild cheers and a standing ovation. According to Variety, it continued for seven minutes at which time Depp was clearly unable to control his emotions.
Mawenn spoke to the audience and said:
“I want to spend this time with Le Pacte, my producer, and my sweetheart.
It was a production that was challenging to fund…
and I want to tell my squad about it from across the theater.”
Over the past few days, there has been much discussion over Depp’s attendance at the famous Cannes Film Festival. The Donnie Brasco actor has a devoted following who stood by him throughout his legal troubles, but the accusations made against him by Amber Heard and the related trial also attracted a large number of haters.
His attendance at Cannes was harshly criticized by many of these critics, so much so that festival director Thierry Fremaux felt obligated to respond before the opening night.
“I don’t know about Johnny Depp’s reputation in the US,” Fremaux stated.
“To tell you the truth, there is only one rule I live by in my life: I must have the freedom to think, to speak, and to act in accordance with the law.
We wouldn’t be discussing it here if Johnny Depp had been prohibited from acting in the movie or if the movie had been outlawed.
“This [controversy] came out once the picture was announced at Cannes since everyone knew Johnny had made a film in French,” he continued.
“I don’t know why she chose him, but you should ask Maiwenn that question.
I’m the last person who should be allowed to talk about the rest of this.
“If there is anyone in the world who showed even the slightest interest in this highly publicized trial, it would be me.
“I’m not sure what the topic is. As an actor, Johnny Depp is someone I care about.
During his historic slander lawsuit against ex-wife Heard, Depp has only appeared in Jeanne du Barry. The actor may still be emotionally scarred by the court case, which was closely followed by the international media, but his circumstances surely seem to be improving recently.
The Edward Scissorhands star inked the largest men’s fragrance deal in history with upscale clothing company Dior, it was revealed earlier this week.
Depp will work with Dior for the following three years under the new agreement, which is rumored to be worth a cool $20 million.
