A local rescue group became aware of an abused dog, writes ilovemydogsomuch. They knew it could be a serious case of neglect, but nothing could have prepared them for what they were about to experience.
They went to the house in question and saw a dog lying motionless nearby. There was a rope around her neck, so tight that she could not breathe. She was all skin and bones. As she lay motionless, the rescuers were not sure if they were too late. But when they got closer, they could see that the poor dog was still breathing. Not really. Still, they had no idea how she had survived for so long.
They cut the rope around her neck and took her to their vehicle. They had no time to lose. She needed to see a veterinarian immediately. They put her on the table and the vet admitted she was shocked. It was a miracle that she had survived this long. The rescuers gave him a name Esmeralda.
Esmeralda was given intravenous medication and fluids and veterinary staff carried out tests. The tests confirmed she was close to death. She was severely malnourished and dehydrated. She was also anemic. Her blood levels were so low that she needed a blood transfusion.
Although Esmeralda’s chances of survival were slim, the vet gave the rescue team the option to release her or continue treatment. The rescuers wept. They didn’t know what to do, but Esmeralda looked at them as if she wanted to say something: ,,Even if I don’t make it, love me anyway.” And that is exactly what they did.
Rescuers and veterinary staff made Esmeralda as comfortable as possible. They continued to care for her so she wouldn’t suffer, but decided not to treat her aggressively. The poor dog had already suffered enough.
In the days that followed, it became clear that this lovely dog really needed love. While her body continued to deteriorate, her mind got better and better. For the first time she was shown respect and affection. She smiled every time a volunteer worker approached her, especially when she met other sick dogs. Esmeralda developed a strong bond with one of the rescuers and stayed with her for 24 hours towards the end. Esmeralda wanted to die alone in the mud with a rope around her neck, not knowing what it felt like to love. Fortunately, she spent her last days feeling accepted and cared for.
Although this story did not end as we had hoped, we are grateful to the rescuers who continue to help animals in need. They continue to show them love and comfort even as time runs out.
Blessings to sweet Esmeralda and thank you to the wonderful rescuers and veterinary staff who never give up.
