It’s amazing what a big difference a little love can make in a dog’s life. So many pets live on the streets and struggle to get by. Once they get the care they need, they are transformed.
Since one dog found a new home, she can’t stop smiling. That’s why she is a star on the Internet and is called “the happiest dog in the world”.
Yes, that big smile is real, and she’s been doing it all the time since her owner Amy Matsushima rescued her.
“She’s very silly, loud and playful when she’s not sleeping; but even then she smiles,” Amy told the Daily Mail. “She really does smile most of the time.”
But Shortcake was not always so lucky. She had a very rough start in life as a stray dog on the streets of Fresno, California, USA.
“Shortcake was found on the streets suffering from severe mange and a hernia,” Amy shared. “Her time at the shelter was over when Fresno Bully Rescue took notice of her.”
“She wasn’t in the best shape. Everyone who met her at the time said she smelled like rotting meat because of her mange.”
But when Amy spotted Shortcake’s photo online, she immediately fell in love with the dog and her perseverance.
“When I saw her picture on the website, I couldn’t believe it,” Amy told Good Morning America. “She looked miserable, but she was wagging her tail and had her little smile, and it hit me right in the heart. I thought, ‘I have to meet this dog.'”
After Amy met Shortcake for the first time, she decided to adopt him. Fortunately, the dog soon recovered from mange.
Shortcake is now a healthy, playful and relaxed dog – she prefers to stay home instead of going for walks. Her new found happiness is clearly visible in her face.
Shortcake’s most noticeable feature is her frequent and wide smile, something Amy still doesn’t quite understand.
I don’t know why she smiles so much,” she said, “I can’t get her to do it on command.”
But Shortcake’s smile inspires the Internet fan base . Her Instagram account @theladyshortcake has more than 185,000 followers.
“The great thing about social media is that people tell me what joy she brings them and how she makes them smile,” Amy said. “I just think that’s so great that she makes other people happy
