Not only we humans can get into dangerous situations from time to time, the same applies to our animal friends. While humans can extricate themselves from certain difficulties, animals are dependent on help from us.
This was also the situation in the following case after two dogs were trapped in a huge hole in the ground that had filled up with water in Mexico. Fortunately, however, the animals were rescued safely due to a rescue mission.
According to the AP, Mexico City has been subject to many natural disasters in the recent past, resulting in a huge hole in the ground, now the size of a football field, where water has collected. The hole has not only swallowed up a lot of land, but also an entire apartment building.
“It is a very difficult time for us. It hurts because this is all we have,” said Magdalena Xalamigua Xopillacle, the owner of the house. “Sometimes we get downright sick because of the grief.”
The situation made headlines around the world and soldiers are making sure no one can approach the hole in the ground.
But when two dogs, Spay and Spike, were discovered in the hole, the situation became even more dramatic. The two furry noses had probably been playing in the field before they fell in. They held on to the edge of the hole to avoid drowning.
The dogs were trapped in the hole for days before they were rescued by firefighters in an elaborate rescue mission.
As UNO TV reported, the unstable condition of the hole in the ground made it impossible to use the rescue helicopter, so firefighters had to climb down personally. A firefighter went down and attached a hoist with cages for the dogs to the animals, which allowed them to be pulled up.
But this undertaking was anything but easy. It was raining on Thursday, making the mission more difficult. Lifting the dogs out reportedly took several attempts.
But everyone involved did not give up and finally the dogs could feel solid ground under their paws again.
The problem of the huge hole in the ground remained, however – it is probably even getting bigger – but the rescue of the dogs was already a great sign.
One cannot thank the brave firefighters enough for this operation. Despite all the risks, they managed to free the dogs from the hole in the ground.
