I (22M) was meeting up with my tinder date (21F) in my downtown area. For context, this area has a huge canal running down the middle. My first impression of her was, HOLY!! She was beautiful, and looked like she had her hair down recently. We were going to a fancy restaurant, so she was wearing a very nice red dress.
To top it all off, her makeup was phenomenal! She was very nice and respectful too. We were having a great night, and after a few drinks we just walked around the city. But, at one point in the night a kid strays away from his parents after dropping something (too dark to see.) The object floats into the canal, and for some reason the kid follows.
He falls into the water and doesn’t know how to swim. Everyone else is just looking around, and while I’m debating if I want to help this kid since no one else is. Out of no where, my date jumps into the water and saves the kid thrashing, drowning. Now I was very proud of her, but now I saw her without makeup and all the glam… I audibly said “you look so different, like a wet dog.” She took this very offensively, which I wasn’t expecting, and she walks away.
I wasn’t trying to be rude, but she obviously didn’t look as well as before she got wet. AITA?
Conclusion
In a shocking twist, a single, insensitive comment shattered what seemed like a perfect evening. What happened next will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about first impressions and kindness.
Here’s how people reacted:
The first words that left your lips were that she didnt look as good having soaked herself to help a strangers child?
She lucked out you showed your true colours so quick. Saved her the time
How can you wonder if you aren’t the AH?
YTA
don’t insult your date, especially after she just did something amazing
You said “i have a side of the story i feel makes it sound like i’m not the asshole” and yet nothing here is mitigating your behavior at all
She’s well rid of you if you are that shallow and not grabbing a coat to get her or the child warm. Did you at least drop a life belt for her or call emergency services?
On the off chance this is even slightly based on real life events, YTA.
